![]() The domain names used by 911 over the years have a few common elements in their original WHOIS registration records, including the address and a Yunhe Wang from Beijing. THE INTERNET NEVER FORGETSĪ review of the clues left behind by 911’s early days on the Internet paint a more complete picture of this long-running proxy network. The 911 user interface, as it existed when the service first launched in 2016. In this scenario, users indeed get to use a free VPN service, but they are often unaware that doing so will turn their computer into a proxy that lets others use their Internet address to transact online. But some of them - like 911 - build their networks in part by offering “free VPN” or “free proxy” services that are powered by software which turns the user’s PC into a traffic relay for other users. Residential proxy services are often marketed to people seeking the ability to evade country-specific blocking by the major movie and media streaming providers. These services can be used in a legitimate manner for several business purposes - such as price comparisons or sales intelligence - but they are massively abused for hiding cybercrime activity because they can make it difficult to trace malicious traffic to its original source. But new research shows the proxy service has a long history of purchasing installations via shady “pay-per-install” affiliate marketing schemes, some of which 911 operated on its own.ĩ11re is one of the original “ residential proxy” networks, which allow someone to rent a residential IP address to use as a relay for his/her Internet communications, providing anonymity and the advantage of being perceived as a residential user surfing the web.įrom a website’s perspective, the IP traffic of a residential proxy network user appears to originate from the rented residential IP address, not from the proxy service customer. 911 says its network is made up entirely of users who voluntarily install its “free VPN” software. It's basically a repeat of the recommended settings above meaning many people are going to set up a proxy coupled with mullvad's vpn.For the past seven years, an online service known as 911 has sold access to hundreds of thousands of Microsoft Windows computers daily, allowing customers to route their Internet traffic through PCs in virtually any country or city around the globe - but predominantly in the United States. I thought perhaps it had something to do with the duality with the vpn, but here are mullvad's general recommended qBT settings (it's interesting that they only provide settings for qBT as this is the only torrent client they recommend). Isn't this going to potentially limit you substantially in the number of seeds/peers you can find and connect to since trackerless torrents in particular will be excluded? (see the faq discussed below) ![]() Why would you want to disable dht, pex, and local peer discovery? I also typically use both TCP and uTP. To disable, go to Step #8 and change the type to (none). Under Proxy Server change Type to SOCKS5.Ĭheckmark the box next to use proxy for peer connections.Ĭheckmark the box next to Disable connections not supported by proxies. The other thing that's very interesting is their suggested qBT settings found here, and are as follows:Ĭlick on Tools followed by Options (Alt-O).ĭisable (Uncheck) Enable Local peer discoveryįor Enabled protocol: Use the drop-down bar and select TCP Of course, using the network interface settings in qBT to bind to the vpn tap driver will accomplish this as well without the need to use a proxy. Mullvad is billing their proxies as an additional protection in the event you start your browser/torrent client before you start their vpn. But you're right, it appears there are no authentication settings that would allow one to access mullvad proxies directly. When I saw your comment my first thought was "how can that be", as all the proxies I've ever used didn't work that way. U/AtlanticJack, you're a wealth of useful and interesting tidbits.
